Preceptor Preparedness


Preceptors are a critical link in nursing education. Preceptors have the opportunity to shape the next generation of nurses. This program has been developed to prepare staff nurses to work as clinical preceptors for undergraduate nursing students. Although specifically desgined to assist the RN precepting student nurses, this content also applies to nurses precepting new graduate nurses and new orientees. This project, in part, was funded by a Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellowship Grant.

Preparing Nurses to Precept Undergraduate Nursing Students

This program will prepare the nurse to be an effective preceptor for undergraduate nursing students. Innovations in nursing education will be discussed. The role of the nurse as clinical educator will be explored. Methods to facilitate clinical learning and clinical evaluation will be emphasized. Techniques for dealing with clinical issues and the dynamic relationship between the preceptor and preceptee will be explored.
